Top places to travel in Vietnam (Part 13): Phu Quoc Island – Vietnam’s Pearl Island

Phu Quoc Island, also known as Pearl Island, is the largest and the most beautiful island in Vietnam. You should not ignore Phu Quoc Island when visiting Vietnam.

1. General Information about Phu Quoc
  • Area: 589.23 km².
  • Population: 93,000 people (2010).
The natural terrain runs from north to south with 99 hills and mountains. Phu Quoc Island is the largest tourist island in Vietnam, belonging to Phu Quoc district, Kien Giang province. For a long time, Phu Quoc has been famous for domestic and foreign tourists. It is considered as the Pearl Island in the Southwest Sea of the country. Especially in 2006, Kien Giang coastal and marine biosphere reserve was recognized by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve.


2. Climate and the best time to travel

In fact, you can experience Phu Quoc tourism at any time of the year because the average annual temperature is only about 28 degrees C.
  • The highest season of Phu Qoc Island is from April to September.
  • However, the dry season (October to March next year) is the best time for Phu Quoc.

3. Transportation

Vehicles to Phu Quoc mainly by planes, high-speed train or ferry.

Traffic in Phu Quoc with three main roads:
  • Tran Hung Dao Street: The road with the most hotels and resorts in Phu Quoc. Most of them have beaches stretching to the end of Truong beach, to An Thoi.
  • 30/4 Street - Phu Quoc dining route: There are many restaurants and eateries, you can try seafood with better prices than night markets.
  •  Hung Vuong Street: This road creates a junction with 30/4 street.

5. Famous tourist spots in Phu Quoc

Northern Phu Quoc Island is a rich land with primeval forest and rich flora and fauna and countless beautiful beaches. Journey to explore the North Island includes:
  • Khu Tuong pepper garden: The Phu Quoc pepper is famous for a stronger aroma than other cultivated pepper. On the way from Duong Dong to Ganh Dau looking at the two sides of the road, you will find the pepper gardens very beautiful.
  • Ganh Dau Cape: The cape jutting out from the northwestern island attracts tourists by the most amazing scenery
  • Dinh Cau Cape is a famous landmark in Phu Quoc. In particular, watching the sunset at Dinh Cau is a thing that any tourist traveling to Phu Quoc should not miss.
  • Hon Thom island is located in the north of Phu Quoc. Here you can snorkel and watch corals, see the aquaculture areas of fishermen and pearl farms
  • Tranh Stream is created from many small streams. The Stream has water from June to September every year.
  • Da Ban Stream: because of owning large and flat stones like table tops, Phu Quoc people named it Da Ban Stream.
  • Da Ngon Stream: With 7 waterfalls, Da Ngoc Stream is majestic and beautiful because it is still a secret for tourists who like to explore and adventurous.
  • Dai Beach was voted by BBC as one of the 10 most pristine and beautiful beaches in the world.


East and South Phu Quoc Island is a lowland area intermingled with secondary forest, which is a residential area of the island. Beautiful beaches attract people like Truong beach, Sao beach and Khem beach. Journey to explore South Island includes:
  • Sao Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Phu Quoc.
  • Khem Beach is unspoiled with white and smooth sand like powder. Eating Khem seafood is great. It specializes in selling grilled fish and herring salad with quite cheap price
  • Ham Ninh fishing village: Visit Ham Ninh early in the morning to watch the sunrise or enjoy the moon nights. Specialties here are crab dishes served with sweet lemon pepper salt.

  • An Thoi archipelago has 15 islands and islets, located along the southwest direction. The sea here is very clear and deep, with a depth of nearly 30m. Guests will find it suitable for activities such as nature exploration, sightseeing, fishing, squid fishing, swimming and snorkeling ...
    • Mong Tay island is the ideal place to experience outdoor activities such as camping and swimming to explore the wild nature.
